Chris Hickey, from Hilltop Farm in Maryland, rides Witness Hilltop, an 8-year-old
Dutch gelding (by Hamlet) from the same breeder who produced Leslie Morse’s Kingston.
Witness, a recent import from the Netherlands, was still doing Fourth Level in December
and did not show in his first CDI until late May. After losing Cabana Boy (sadly
put down after a pasture accident last year), Hickey knew what he was seeking when
he went on a buying trip. “I looked at over 15 horses,” he says. “Jane (MacElree,
owner of Hilltop Farm) really wanted a horse that could do St. Georges and I-1.”
He did not count on making the Pan Am team with his new mount however. “It’s a little
late. We’re not putting a lot of pressure on it. It will be what it will be. This
is a fabulous young horse we’re very excited to have.”
